The famous British travel guide Lonely Planet called the city of Sao Paulo the “Little Japan”

The Liberdade district, in the central region of Sao Paulo, is now among the 25 best “tourist” destinations of 2026. This is what the Best in Travel 2026 ranking, promoted by Lonely planet, British travel guide.

The stronghold of the largest Japanese community outside Japan is the only Brazilian representative on the list, which brings together places and experiences from all continents. The neighborhood also received the seal of “best for the intersection of culture and gastronomy”.

Despite the strong Asian influence, the British publication also highlights the black memory of Freedom, citing the Capela dos Aflitos, a church from 1779, which housed a cemetery for slaves.

The publication concludes that, in addition to shopping and the delights of local Asian cuisine, one of the major attractions of the neighborhood is precisely that of offering new points of view on the history of Brazil.
