A 13-year-old teenager had part of his intestines removed during surgery after swallowing more than 80 high-powered magnets in New Zealand. The information was released by the scientific journal New Zealand Medical Journal.

According to the publication, the boy was hospitalized after four days of intense abdominal pain. He told doctors that he had ingested 80 to 100 5×2 mm magnets a week earlier.

Through X-ray examination, professionals detected four “lines” of magnets in the boy’s intestines. In the intestine, due to the magnetic force, objects joined together.

During the exploratory laparotomy procedure, doctors found two areas of pressure necrosis in the small intestine and two in the large intestine. To remove the objects, part of the organ was removed through a resection process.

After surgery to remove part of the intestine, the teenager had complications due to hemorrhage. Despite the initial problem, he recovered and was discharged after eight days.

Even if the patient recovered from the surgery, the publication highlights the risks of future complications, such as intestinal obstruction due to adhesions, abdominal hernia and chronic pain.

The scientific magazine points out that the sale of high-power magnets is limited in New Zealand, but that the boy made the purchase via an international online site. The publication did not explain how the young man had ingested the objects.
