According to the agency, the components present in the composition of gel cosmetics can affect fertility and cause cancer.
THE National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved, last Wednesday (29), the provision that determines the ban on trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) and dimethyltolylamine (DMTA), substances present in nail polish and gel nails.
“With the decision, the Brazil is in line with the safety standards of European Unionwhich recently banned these ingredients too. The measure prevents products considered unsafe in other countries from being sold here. The ban on both substances applies to all cosmetics”, explains the agency in a statement.
Understand the ban
According to Anvisa, the component ban aims to do this “protect the health of people who use these products and above all of the professionals who work with them”. This is because international studies, conducted on animals, have shown that TPO can harm fertility. Already the DMTA contains carcinogenic toxins.
The greatest risks occur after ingestion of the substances. However, experts point out that, although less likely, there are still adverse effects related to direct skin contact, such as dryness, dermatitis and even chemical burns. Both components are often used in salons, since exposure to ultraviolet light (UV), help fix the enamel and ensure its durability.
“Although the occupational risk is more intense, users are also subject to impacts resulting from exposure, reinforcing their social dimension (…) It is worth highlighting that adverse events resulting from these substances are, in general, associated with repeated and prolonged exposure. Therefore, occasional or infrequent contact represents a significantly lower risk. However, the factor does not eliminate the need for a prohibition measure,” said the director of Anvisa Daniela Mareco.
The Agency, therefore, has established a maximum period of 90 days for companies and businesses to cease the sale and use of the products. He also instructed the companies in charge to collect those still in stores and distributors.
