Through the Anjo Rosa Community, Mariana Fernandes welcomes patients and families in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease
When the physiotherapist Mariana Fernandesbreast cancer specialist, discovered that she would have to face the same diagnosis as many patients she had already helped, she was born with the desire to be more than a healthcare professional and become a shoulder to lean on. Here’s how Community of Pink Angelsan online support and information network aimed at women living with the disease.
The discovery of breast cancer
For the specialist, nothing happens by chance, not even the diagnosis. Mariana says that, since college, Physiotherapyshe has always enjoyed studying breast cancer. The topic was also the focus of his final work of the course. Furthermore, at the beginning of her professional career, she dedicated herself to helping women during the treatment of the disease.
In 2020, however, after discovering a localized lump, she switched from doctor to patient. “Life changes completely. I felt like I died the day I was diagnosed. And I was reborn as a completely different person, just with the same memories. It’s crazy. You go back to society, to your family, to your friends who are you, but you feel this difference,” details.
Fernandes underwent an initial cycle of treatment, with bilateral mastectomy and hormone therapy, but, a year and a half later, the disease returned in a more aggressive form. At that moment he reports feeling a certain loneliness. “Even though I had a lot of access and a lot of people around me, I felt very alone,” he says.
The Pink Angel Community is born
According to the physiotherapist, what helped her the most to find support was the Oncoguia Institutea portal that provides specialized information for cancer patients. He believes that the NGO acted as a light in a “dark room”. Shortly after, Mari She had a dream that awakened in her the desire to also illuminate the lives of women in situations similar to hers.
“I told my husband: ‘I have to do something, I don’t know what’. And I dreamed of that name, Anjo Rosa. Many people think that my name is Mari AnjoRosa, because it has become part of me. When I woke up, I already knew what I wanted to do. I told him: ‘I will do something'”, tells.
Thus was born the Anjo Rosa Community, a free platform created to provide reliable information and support patients, as well as their families. Today there are more than six thousand OncoFriendsas the participants are called, the support network, in collaboration with Oncoguia, offers knowledge, support and care in the face of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
“Everything I am today I owe to my family, my OncoFriends and this whole structure, because we are nothing alone. The support network is everything. There are so many ways to help that people often get lost. But the support network is nothing more than the place where we learn how to help and what to do after finding out the diagnosis,” concludes Mari.
