The mega operation

The “Containment Operation”, carried out in the Penha and Alemão compounds, in Rio de Janeiro, went down in history as the deadliest police action in the country, surpassing even the Carandiru massacre of 1992. In total, 134 people died and more than 50 were arrested during the offensive which involved around 2,500 civil and military police officers, with the support of armored vehicles and helicopters.

According to the authorities, the objective was to carry out warrants against the leaders of the Red Command, but the operation turned into a real urban war, with intense shootings, houses invaded and residents terrified by violence.
