Terril was found submerged by another grandchild, with water still flowing from the tap. The temperature was so hot that the family was unable to remove the body from the bathtub. The estimated temperature was 136 degrees Fahrenheit, or 58 degrees Celsius, 15 degrees above the allowable limit in California.
Desperate family members tried to resuscitate the elderly man, but “were forced to watch in horror as his skin peeled off his body,” the court statement said. His son, wife and three grandchildren witnessed the tragedy.
The cause of death was severe burns and scalds over 30% of the man’s body, according to the medical examiner in charge of the case. The family accuses the hotel of murder, saying it was not a random accident.
Terril served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam with the Marines. He retired as a senior technician for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority in California. He was married to his high school sweetheart for 54 years and leaves behind two children and four grandchildren.
