Advances in formulation and changing habits drive growth in the plant-based segment with less sugar
The global trend towards reducing sugar consumption has consolidated itself as a major transformation in the food and beverage sector. The movement, which began among products considered indulgent, such as soft drinks and desserts, is now advancing towards categories associated with healthiness, including plant-based beverages.
According to research Plant-based foods ready for growthfrom the Euromonitor Internationalthe plant-based beverage market is expected to continue to expand. Even more so if driven by the search for products that combine nutrition, flavor and cleaner formulations. Reducing sugar, previously a technological and sensory challenge, has become a priority for consumers who want more balanced and easily digestible options. However, they don’t want to give up the taste experience.
Plant-based beverage movement
This movement follows the trend of clean label, which enhances short lists of ingredients and transparency in formulations. Furthermore, the advancement of the so-called “inclusive nutrition” also counts in this reasoning. This takes into account different dietary needs, from people with intolerances and allergies to those looking to reduce their consumption of dairy products, ultra-processed foods and added sugars.
“The reduction of sugar in plant-based drinks reflects a broader change in behavior. People want to consume mindfully, but still seek the pleasure of taste and convenience in everyday life”explains the nutritionist Alessandra Julyclinical nutrition specialist and brand consultant Possible. According to her, the industry’s challenge is to create products that meet this demand without compromising nutritional value or sensory acceptance.
In Brazil, the search for products with lower sugar content has attracted a new audience, including consumers who do not follow restrictive diets, but want to reduce calorie intake and avoid blood sugar spikes. The reformulation of recipes, the use of natural sweeteners and the balanced combination of ingredients have allowed brands to develop products with more complete and digestible nutritional profiles.
Finally, for the expert, the trend towards sugar reduction in plant-based drinks represents a milestone in the maturity of the market: “It is an important step towards more inclusive, sustainable products aligned with new consumer expectations”.
