Do you have a vacancy? Gabriel Jesus has the second best goal average in the national team

Absent since the Diniz era, the player scored 19 goals in 64 games for Amarelinha (average of 0.3 goals per game); he loses only to Richarlison

On the verge of returning from a serious left knee (ACL) injury, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus still dreams of being part of the Brazilian national team. This is because the 28-year-old – not called up since 2023 – has the second best goal average for Amarelinha among all the attackers called up after the last World Cup, in 2022.

Currently, seven players in this position have had opportunities in Canarinho. Vitor Roque (recalled, now by Ancelotti), João Pedro, Matheus Cunha, Pedro, Endrick, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus himself. And, taking into account all these players’ matches with the national team (now including matches before the 2022 World Cup), the Arsenal striker is second only to Richarlison.

Average goals for the national team

Vitor Roque (Palmeiras) and João Pedro (Chelsea) are the only ones to have passed zero so far. Matheus Cunha (Manchester United) has scored one goal in 16 games, while Pedro (Flamengo) has scored the same number of goals, but in just six games. Endrick scored three goals in 14 appearances, averaging 0.21.

Above him appears Gabriel Jesus: the former Palmeiras player scored 19 goals in 64 games, with an average of 0.3 goals per game. At the top of the list is Richarlison (Tottenham). Brazil’s top scorer at the last World Cup, Pombo scored 20 goals in his 53 appearances for the Seleção. Its average is therefore 0.38.

Gabriel Jesus close to return

After nine months of absence, Gabriel Jesus is preparing to return to the field at the end of this year. The striker has stepped up his physical and strength training, as well as introducing ball activity and impressing Arsenal’s coaching staff. The club have not set a deadline, but the expectation is that he will be available to manager Mikel Arteta between the end of November and the beginning of December.

Jesus, after all, got injured just when he was having one of his best moments last season. It was after he regained his starting place and scored six goals in four games, just after being out for two weeks with a groin problem. The new injury came on 12 January 2025, against Manchester United, in the FA Cup, when he contested a ball with Bruno Fernandes and fell awkwardly. He had to undergo surgery, which took place on January 22, and has been recovering since then.

Gabriel Jesus already has 26 goals for Arsenal –

“This is the biggest injury I’ve had in my life, and it happened while I was having my best moment off the pitch. I was preparing well, relaxing, eating well, sleeping well, recovering well, and then it happened. That’s why I say we couldn’t have expected it,” he said in an interview on Arsenal’s official channels.
