Does the home office cause hair loss? The doctor says yes

Many people joke that they are going bald due to the home office. However, this is far from a joke. According to Dr. Luciano Barsanti, president of the Brazilian Society of Trichology and medical director of the Instituto do Cabelo de São Paulo, hair loss due to telogen effluvium has a connection with this type of work.

First of all, what is this “telogen effluvium” after all? Let’s explain: it is hair loss caused by events such as stress, postpartum, bariatric surgery and very restrictive diets or anemia, for example. This situation is considered acute when it lasts up to six months, but it can become chronic if there is an autoimmune disease or malnutrition.

According to the Instituto do Cabelo, 70% of patients who seek the company monthly complaining of abnormal hair loss suffer from telogen effluvium – and 80% of them work from home, as determined by the doctors of the clinic.

“Our research universe is large, because we perform more than 1,500 monthly consultations”, warns Dr. Barsanti.

diagnosis and treatment

It is necessary to be very attentive to abnormal hair loss and not to seek miracle cures, the doctor warns.

“It is necessary for the patient to undergo a specialist medical examination and some specific tests to identify if the fall has a genetic background – androgenetic alopecia, which affects both men and women – or is caused by telogen effluvium. After the medical investigation and the tests performed, we can make a diagnosis and indicate the best treatment, ”she says.

In the event that the fall is caused by daily stress, Dr. Barsanti explains it it is possible to carry out a non-invasive treatment and multidisciplinary, in order to reduce hair loss and promote the birth of new hair.

“This multidisciplinarity is linked to the adoption of new habits, such as the practice of meditation, the execution of relaxation techniques and physical activities, all in favor of the fight against stress,” said Dr. Barsanti.

Part of the fault lies with remote work

Many people mistakenly think that those who work from home are more relaxed. Most of the time, however, the exact opposite happens.

“It may sound cliché, but those who work from home need a schedule that includes moments of physical activity, lunch and rest. Take care of the quality of sleep it also helps relieve stress, which promotes hair growth, ”explains the doctor.

A balanced diet can also help patients with hair loss. Good quality protein, lots of water and dark green vegetables are beneficial for hair health.

“We only get patients who come to the office when the condition worsens considerably. If there is a sharp drop, you need to know why, “she warns.
