Mental health in the company: the lessons learned from the pandemic

Mental health has become an increasingly relevant topic inside and outside companies. And although the pandemic has strengthened its importance, there is still a taboo on the subject within organizations with little investment in solutions that aid in prevention, awareness and adequate treatment.

According to Carolina Dassie, CEO of Hisnek, a health technology that developed the IVI application, a virtual assistant for emotional health and well-being in the corporate environment, there is still a stigma on mental health and this makes people reluctant to seek help or even tell me about it.

“Even though the topic has become more relevant in recent years, people have some resistance on related issues. It is very common for people to leave their jobs looking for a specialist when they have a sore throat, or a severe cold, for example, but seeking help when feeling emotionally shaken becomes a little more difficult, as there is fear. of judgment, or even cultural resistance ”, he explains.

high stress index

According to a survey by the International Stress Management (ISMA) today 72% of Brazilian workers suffer from stress, while 32% have burnout syndrome.

Also according to the Global Report on Mental Health published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in June of this year, only in the first year after the emergence of the new coronavirus there has been a 25% increase in cases of depression and anxiety. .

For the CEO of Hisnek, the pandemic has brought light and left a series of lessons learned on the subject, which has caused companies to seek more and more solutions to support. Carolina Dassie separated three reflections that the period of isolation and remote work left for mental health companies.

1. The role of host

Active listening and acceptance by the human resources of companies is essential to help employees, both to take care of their health, and to seek help when needed.

2. The use of technology

With the adaptation to remote or hybrid work, the use of technology becomes fundamental to actively and effectively help people within companies, as it is possible to identify who is vulnerable or experiencing a specific problem related to mental health.

In this way the department can implement a series of prevention, awareness and guidance actions for adequate treatment.

3. Fight against stigma

There is still a mental health stigma that causes people not to seek treatment. Therefore, human resources must remain open to welcome without judgment and be confidential. This is an important step and helps to accommodate the employee when needed.

An example of a disease that still causes a lot of discomfort but can trigger other diseases if not treated is the burnout syndrome, classified by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon that arises from work-related stress, leaving the person exhausted, with little energy and makes her stop believing in what it produces.
