Terry Fox Run: the chance to literally run for health

The 42nd edition of the Terry Fox Run, one of the main solidarity races in the world, is scheduled for October 1st, at the Marechal Mário Ary Pires Olympic Training and Research Center (COTP), in Sao Paulo. Another 70 cities, in addition to Rio de Janeiro, will promote this initiative. The competition aims to raise funds for cancer research.

Held by Maple Bear, the world’s largest network of bilingual schools, Terry Fox Run promotes annual events in 33 countries across five continents, primarily Canada. Through this project, Maple Bear hopes to attract approximately 1,500 participants to the capital of Sao Paulo.

Terry Fox Run: how the race was born

The inspiration for the initiative is the trajectory of Canadian Terry Fox who, in 1977, was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg. Despite having to amputate part of his limb, Fox embarked on a march through Canada in 1980, which he called the Marathon of Hope. His goal was to raise awareness in the country and raise funds for research into treatments for the disease.

With a lot of determination, he ran an average of 42 kilometers a day for 143 days and earned more than $ 24 million at the time. As the disease progressed, he was unable to finish his journey. On the other hand, his example has continued to inspire solidarity contests in Canada and many other countries.

“Terry Fox is a Canadian hero with a passion to help others and his story is already part of the Maple Bear program. In addition to demonstrating the concept of gratitude to students and the value of coming together to support a common goal, running will be without. doubt a great exercise in teamwork and a perfect way for our school to express our values. At the same time, it will raise vital funds for much needed cancer research, “says André Quintela, CEO of Maple Bear in Latin America.

How to participate

Registration costs R $ 100 per person, but there will be gradual discounts based on the number of registered participants. In Brazil, the amount raised will be used to combat cancer studies carried out by the Research Center of Hospital do Amor (formerly Barretos Cancer Hospital), an international reference in the humanized treatment of cancer.

Registrations can be made on the event website. If you don’t have any children enrolled in the Canadian network, simply choose the “I’m not part of the Maple Bear network” option. The deadline to register for the Terry Fox Run in Sao Paulo is 12 September.
