6 tips to harmonize moments of tension and pay more attention in everyday life

Understanding how stress hinders attention and knowing what to do

We often live in such a rigid way that we end up feeling a lot of pressure. When this happens, we are brought into a moment of high tension that ends up diminishing our attention, which can generate unpleasant sensations such as anguish, nervousness and stress when we are under pressure.

I heard the expression “high tension lowers attention” from a psychotherapist a year ago. Since then, this phrase has been present in my life. I really notice in my daily life, when the tension is high, my attention decreases.

I forget about appointments, I meddle with others and everything becomes a mess. It is a sign that I am pushing my limits. I need to review my routine and see how I can get back on track. And for you, what is it like when you feel under pressure? Is your attention still the same?

How to identify that something is out of control

When attention is low, we can make small and big mistakes in life. Wrong paths that can lead us to dangerous places, forgetting the flame of the burning stove and leaving the house, forgetting to press an important button on the machinery at work, forgetting to pick up the child in a normal activity, etc.

The key phrases serve as mental signals that in the control panel of emotion and life management I am extrapolating my limits and boundaries. How:

  • I can not handle it anymore!
  • I can’t find anything else!
  • I’m late again!
  • It’s all a mess!

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian psychologist, developed the theory of to flow – in Portuguese, to flow. It is a state of mind of focus and ecstasy when you do something that makes you excited and happy.

When you are out of this flow, you can go from one extreme of boredom – when the capacity for action is not in question, to the other extreme that can generate anxiety – when life’s challenges outweigh the capacity for action.

When a person is in harmony with the flow, he is at his full potential. Do what you like. Time does not exist. Zero or almost zero tension and awareness. Of course, this full-flow trace doesn’t always occur. Our actions flow according to the challenges of life.

When moments of high tension occur, in moments when the pressure to charge is so great that you feel like you have to do something and you can’t, you can use a sentence as a sign of the situation, for example:

When I don’t express myself, I stress.

When he withdraws, due to the embarrassment or impediment of others, the tendency is to increase the tension and again the attention is reduced, generating thoughts that insinuate himself that he is not doing his tasks well, depreciating himself. He again generates the driving wheel of “more tension, less attention”.

Your mind cannot stay in the here and now. The attention is empty and floating in the air. Attention flees and despair and anguish take their place. Confirming your mental condemnation of feeling incapable or ineffective.

How to harmonize moments of tension and inattention

As tension builds, you can use the following mechanisms to relax. If you need help, I’m here: make an appointment!

Meditation

Each practice works on concentration and attention. It can help equalize the high voltage. When the body relaxes, breathing returns to normal, attention also returns and harmony enters the ideal level. Find out more about meditation and its benefits in this special article.

Phisical exercises

Even if it’s just a walk, they help relieve tension in the body. If you go to a nice place, it helps to ease your mind. Dancing is also a relaxing alternative, as is swimming, a great exercise for the respiratory tract, in addition to naturally relaxing water. When the pace is slow, the tendency is to become calmer.

positive image

Having a soothing image in mind can help you when you feel tense, remember that image. It may change from time to time. You can even print an image that represents this idea and make it visible. Be it a beach, a mountain or a place that makes you happy.

conscious breathing

When you take a calm and aware breath, especially in times that can generate stress, the tension is unlikely to build. And if this happens, just resume the rhythm of the breath and the attention returns (you can learn a mindful breathing exercise here).

personal mantra

Use a phrase that is a personal mantra to regain attention and act positively and effectively. For example: “breathe and be inspired” or “breathe slowly to calm me down” or “go back to my center and focus”. Rhyming phrases are easy to record. Create yours as you see fit.

personal time

Take the time to organize your spaces so that energy flows and you don’t feel the pressure to tidy up and find things. If you can’t do it on your own, ask a friend for help or hire an expert. Don’t occupy your mind with something that raises your tension in an action that you can delegate or make the process more enjoyable by changing your perspective on the situation.

Relaxing often means letting go of the reins of control. Knowing when to have authority, delegating unnecessary things, and letting go.

There are times in life when the tension can only be fleeting. Trial periods or closing agreements, for example. The warning signal must be activated if the voltage is constant. Because not only your attention will be damaged, but also your physical, mental and emotional health.

Take your foot off the accelerator of life. Follow the tips above and chances are your tension will decrease and your attention will increase.
