Trips that take up to six hours, such as traveling between Paris and the French Riviera, can be done in four and a half hours
The French series of high-speed trains, the so-called TGV (High-speed train, or Train to the Grande Vitesse in French), will be expanded in 2024. According to the operating companies Alstom and SNCF (Society Nationale des Railways Franceses), the new railway line ‘ TGV M‘it will have capacity for more passengers, as well as being faster and more sustainable than the trains currently in operation.

The exact launch date and ticket prices have not yet been announced, but SNCF has already announced that there will be 115 new trains: 100 for domestic journeys and the rest for international routes to Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Netherlands. . The total investment of the state-owned company for these modernizations is approximately 2.7 billion euros (almost 14 billion reais).
What’s new
While current trains reach speeds of up to 322 km / h, the new TGV Ms will reach 354 km / h, a speed close to that of the fastest Japanese bullet trains. In practice, some routes will be substantially shorter. For example, the journey that today takes about six hours from Paris to San Raffaelewhich is 20 minutes from Cannes, a French Rivierait covers itself in four and a half hours.
The trains of this new fleet will also be more modular, allowing operators to adapt the number of cars and the interior of the wagons to suit the needs of passengers. The idea is that the seats can be rearranged to carry bicycles or special luggage or so that, depending on the sales, a 1st class car can be quickly converted into 2nd class and vice versa. In addition, the interior space will be increased by 20%, which means a capacity of up to 740 seats compared to the current maximum of 634.
According to the manufacturers of Alstom, TGV Ms should also be more technological, which will lead to greater energy efficiency and a 32% reduction in CO² emissions. For passengers, the trains will also have Wi-Fi and an internal communication system that will keep them updated on their journey.
