How to prevent the car window or helmet from receiving drops of water

User @jorgevalenzuelam posted a video on his TikTok that teaches a technique to prevent water from accumulating on the car window using a potato. As a result, this video went viral and reached the threshold of over 20 million views by the time this article was published.

Let’s reproduce this technique to understand how and why it works.

The test

First we separate the glass into two areas with adhesive tape to make it easier to see the result. The idea is that on the one hand we will see the effect with the use of the technique and on the other hand not.

So the first step was to cut the potato in half and rub it directly on the glass. Then, we pass a clean, dry cloth to remove the excess and leave the glass well polished.

Note that the glass must be very clean before application, otherwise the potato mass will stick to the dirt and create an even bigger mess.

Then we remove the tape and pour a lot of water on it, as if it were rainwater.

Finally, we could see the impressive result, proving that the technique really works! On the side we passed the potato was smooth, clear and without any drops to tell a story. And don’t worry, because polishing with the cloth won’t stain.

What makes the drops adhere to the glass and make it mist up

At first, compared to the drops, these remain trapped in the glass due to the condensation that is created on the surface, which interacts directly with the water molecules, fixing them to the windows. In other words, the glass surface creates a bond with the dropspreventing, to some extent, that they are dragged by gravity.

In the case of fogged glass, the effect occurs due to the difference between the internal and external temperature of the vehicle. That is, the temperature difference causes the glass to condense even more, drawing moisture from the air, which in turn binds and turns into larger drops, causing the glass to fog up.

It is worth remembering that in case of fogged glass, the potato will not work (we have already tested it!)

expert word

We spoke to Lucas Moreno, professor of Chemistry, head of the Moleculando project, who explained the dynamics of the process between potato and glass.

According to him, the process works because the potato starch creates a kind of “protective layer” on the surface of the glass, breaking the surface tension of the water. This process is possible thanks to the glucose polysaccharide present in the potato.
