Just hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the cities of Brescia and Bergamo, in Lombardy, will share the title of Italian Capital of Culture in 2023.

The honor is bestowed annually by the government and acts as a catalyst for a busy calendar of events from January to December. This Wednesday 5 the communication campaign created to advertise the municipalities and activities was unveiled.

“Bergamo and Brescia are strongholds of our territory, two important realities for the history and future of Lombardy, a symbol of productive heritage and commitment to the service of the common good”, highlighted the governor of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana.

According to him, “the joint candidacy of Bergamo and Brescia represented an opportunity for rebirth and restart after the Covid experience. Culture as a development factor is certainly a merit”, underlined Fontana.

The choice of Bergamo and Brescia is particularly moving, given that the cities were the first epicenters of the new coronavirus in Europe and the situation dominated the world news with images and videos of overwhelmed hospitals and reports of thousands of deaths.

“We immediately joined the initiative with enthusiasm and took note of the commitments of the Region in a specific Memorandum of Understanding. Euro for the construction of infrastructural works and events”, added the governor.

The opening ceremony of the more than 500 initiatives begins on January 20 with events taking place simultaneously in both cities.

The program throughout the year will also include activities in monuments, palaces, tastings, as well as social and educational projects to combat vulnerability. For the three-year period 2021-2023, the two municipalities are planning investments of € 158 million for more welcoming and sustainable infrastructure works.

The exceptional initiatives crown a dense program of 100 projects, of which over 90 funded for 3.5 million euros by the Cariplo Foundation together with the Community Foundations of Bergamo and Brescia for cultural promotion.
