Do it yourself: 5 homemade solutions to clean carpet stains

Fundamental in the decoration, the carpets make the rooms even more beautiful and welcoming, even if they are used as decorative objects. However, regardless of attention, there is always a risk of spilling drinks, foods or products that can cause stains.

To help get rid of possible stains, João Pedro Lúcio, operations technician at Maria Brasileira, a network of residential and business cleaning and care franchises, lists five tips with homemade solutions.

Vinegar

-

Perfect for removing stains, vinegar also removes bad smell from carpets and also sanitizes by eliminating germs. To remove stains, dilute a little mild detergent in warm water and add white vinegar. Simply apply the mixture to the stained or soiled part of the carpet and gently scrub to clean, removing the mixture with a damp cloth. After that, let it dry. If you spilled an alcoholic drink, mix a glass of vinegar with two scoops of cold water, spray on the area, and wipe off the excess with a paper towel.

Acetone

-

The product is the most suitable for removing nail polish that, by chance, fell on the carpet in a moment of distraction. To do this, it is enough to moisten a cloth with acetone and press (without rubbing) on the spilled nail polish. Finish with a mixture of detergent and warm water to make sure the excess polish and acetone don’t stay on the carpet.

Ice

-

Ice can be a good ally when it comes to removing that piece of rubber stuck to the carpet. Just wrap an ice cube in a cloth or plastic bag and apply it to the area for about 30 minutes, or until you notice that the gum is “frozen”. This procedure will make it easier for you to remove it. If necessary, use a spoon to scrape and completely remove the chewing gum.

warm soapy water

-

To clean the oil spilled on the carpet, simply remove the excess with a dry cloth. Next, make a mixture of warm water and liquid soap and rub on the stain until it disappears. The same mixture can be used to clean dog pee. In this case, just apply on the stain, leave it on for about 5 minutes and remove the liquid with a clean sponge. Warning: this tip is recommended for recent stains. If the stain has been around for longer, replace the soap with vinegar and let it sit longer.

Hydrogen peroxide

-

The product can be used to clean chocolate or coffee stains. But first, soak up all the liquid with the help of a paper towel. Next, mix the hydrogen peroxide with warm water and apply it to the stain to clean it.

Final tip: Before using any product, test it on a small area to see if it doesn’t stain so you don’t risk ruining the carpet.
