The expert reveals the main causes of dizziness and when the symptom should be seen as a warning sign

Do you often get dizzy? The most common reported problems include dizziness, imbalance, nonspecific vertigo and presyncope. According to nutritionist Tasso Carvalho, this is not normal and should trigger a warning sign.
“It cannot be considered normal to have dizziness. This symptom can be the first sign of a health problem. In some cases it can also be accompanied by ringing in the ears, nausea and vomiting,” he warns.
Dizziness is something quite common and accounts for about 5-6% of medical consultations, the specialist points out. It can occur at any age, but it becomes more common as people get older. In fact, the symptom affects about 40% of individuals over the age of 40 at some point in their life, for different reasons.
This sensation can be temporary, when it occurs and disappears soon after, or chronic, when it lasts for more than a month.
What can cause dizziness?
According to the doctor, some of the causes of dizziness may be related to metabolic, neurological, hematological and / or inflammatory changes. Examples are low blood glucose levels and fluctuations in blood pressure. Also, dizziness can be a symptom of labyrinthitis, migraine, or anemia.
According to the Ministry of Health, the percentages of patients with various causes of dizziness are: 40% have peripheral vestibular dysfunction; 10% have central neurological damage (vestibular system or brain stem); 15% have a psychiatric disorder; and 25% have other problems, such as pre-syncope and imbalance. In another 10%, the diagnosis remains unknown.
“Dizziness can still be caused by a side effect of drugs, such as sedatives, antidepressants, antihypertensives or anticonvulsants, or by a high level of stress,” explains the specialist.
According to Tasso, in all cases, the individual who has dizziness with a certain recurrence should go to a doctor to investigate the cause. The healthcare professional will be responsible for choosing the appropriate treatment for each case.
