Baby colic: how to deal with them?

First of all, know that colic signals nothing wrong with you, your milk, or your baby. They are contractions of the intestinal loops, an organ that is still in the process of adapting, and can last up to three months. The picture, in fact, is heartbreaking: the child cries, writhes, reddens, the hands close, the irritation …

However, some precautions can reduce a lot of suffering to a minimum:

  • Massage the oil clockwise, which is the intestinal transit route, onto your baby’s belly.
  • Warm a cloth – it can be a diaper – and leave some on the area, over the clothes. You can buy a bag of seeds, made specifically for this purpose, and heat it in the microwave – there are versions that are stuffed animals.
  • Place the baby on your lap, facing you, and flex your thighs on your stomach. This helps eliminate gas and stool.
  • A warm bath also reduces discomfort. You can use the hot tub or the bucket, keeping the baby’s body in the water for a while.
  • Breastfeeding calms the baby, but don’t do it if he has already been breastfed, as this will encourage contractions.
  • Don’t despair or be nervous – try to stay calm and give your baby peace of mind. Talk to him very softly, sing, rock him …
  • Try the “5S method”: wrap the baby (this step is not essential); put it on its side on your arm, with the belly facing out; offer him your own little hand to suck; walk and swing it slightly with your arms; make the “shhhhh shhhh” noise. This technique of the American pediatrician Harvey Karp consists in simulating the feeling of comfort that the baby had in the uterus and corresponds to the English terms: swaddle, side position, suck, swing and shuh, respectively.
  • Never medicate your child without a prescription from a pediatrician.
  • Old teas are no longer recommended. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), babies up to 6 months of age should be exclusively breastfed.
