12 weeks of pregnancy: development of the baby

Congratulations! It must not have been easy so far, but you managed to make it into the last week of the first trimester of pregnancy. Your baby is now about 5.5cm from head to bottom, about the size of a plum. See how he grows fast. At 12 weeks of pregnancy, you are past that critical stage, when unpleasant symptoms, such as nausea and sleepiness, are most pronounced. It has also passed the period when the possibility of miscarriage is greatest. According to statistics, 30% of women lose pregnancy early. Some do not even know they are pregnant and think they have just had their period.

12 weeks of pregnancy: development of the baby

12 weeks pregnant: time to tell the world!

Precisely because miscarriages are common in the first few weeks, many fathers and mothers choose to wait these first three months to finally break the news of the pregnancy to friends and family. Those who have suffered one or more losses, above all, know how difficult it is to tell them that they are expecting a baby and then have to explain the sad outcome. So, they prefer to wait. But now that you’ve gotten this far, maybe it’s time to get the word out. Have you ever thought about how to do it?

Your baby at 12 weeks of pregnancy

In addition to gaining in size and weight, your baby is already a mini human being. The main organs are ready, they are just developing and growing. The eyes, which until then were on the sides of the head, are closer together and the ears are practically in their final position. The bones, made up of tissues, begin to take shape and stiffen, making your baby stronger.

The intestine, which was once just a swollen area of the umbilical cord, begins to enter the abdominal cavity. Also: at the 12th week of pregnancy, even if you don’t realize it, your child already has reflexes to his external actions: he reacts, for example, when you caress his belly.

What happens to your body now?

Since your baby is most likely already receiving nutrients and oxygen through the placenta, it is entirely possible that the hormones involved in the formation of this organ in the last few weeks will begin to stabilize. With this, your mood swings, sleep, fatigue and nausea tend to subside. You will be more available and you will be able to take the opportunity to start designing the delightful details, such as the decoration of the bedroom and the baby’s layette. You don’t have to buy anything yet if you don’t want to, but you can start coming up with some ideas and picking themes and tones.

Take care of your food! As nausea and discomfort diminish by 12 weeks of pregnancy, many pregnant women become aroused and want to “catch up” by attacking the refrigerator. Caution. Eat well, but not for two. This is no time for restrictive diets, but don’t overdo it. This is because if you maintain gradual weight gain, your baby is also likely not gaining too much weight, which facilitates your pregnancy, avoids complications such as hypertension and gestational diabetes, and also makes it easier to prepare for childbirth. If your obstetrician has approved it, now is a good time to include exercise – at least 30 minutes a day – in your routine.
