Baba, baby: Is it normal for the baby to drool so much?

You’ve probably noticed that your child suddenly started drooling more. There is a mouth cloth to deal with so much liquid! Sometimes the baby’s drool is so intense that his face and neck are completely wet, even flooding the collar of blouses and overalls. To avoid so many changes of clothes, you can adopt those bandana bibs, which are a delight.

Why did he go up a lot?

Baby drooling is a normal organic reaction. First, because the baby puts his hands in his mouth more at this stage – and he also likes to suck or suck on some toys.

Another possible explanation is that some babies start showing teething signs at four months of age. Even if the first tooth does not appear for five or six months, the drool can arrive sooner.

It is worth knowing that saliva is produced in the six salivary glands existing in the mouth region, which can produce two to four liters per day. In babies, excess drool can be the result of underdeveloped muscles around the mouth – after all, the baby still doesn’t chew! -, a lot of saliva production or poor swallowing control.

When should I worry?

Up to 18 months of age, on average, your baby will still drool a lot. There’s no need to worry, as saliva helps you chew and swallow food better and also keeps your mouth hydrated and teeth free of cavities. However, if the excess seems unusual, talk to your pediatrician.
