A girl was born in India with eight embryos inside her abdomen. As posted on the site Health mail onlinethis Friday 4, doctors believe that the girl, born in the city of Ranchi, “absorbed” the embryos while she was in the womb.
The case was uncovered after the team performed an ultrasound to investigate why her belly was swollen. The embryos were all malformed and this situation is classified as a parasitic twin, a rare event that occurs when a non-viable or malformed fetus is swallowed by the normally developing twin. It can usually lodge in the abdomen or retroperitoneal cavity.
The girl, who was not identified, had all eight embryos removed in a 1.5-hour operation performed last month at the city’s Rani Children Hospital & Research Center, about three weeks after her birth. The girl is recovering well from the surgery, local media reported.
According to the website, only 200 cases of twin parasites have been detected in the medical literature. Doctors believe this may be the case where most embryos have been found inside a child in history.
Medicine still does not know how to explain why cases of parasitic twins occur. Some have theorized that the healthy one connects to the mother via the placenta, while the other attaches to the blood vessels of the twin. As the larger twin grows, the smaller one is absorbed into the abdomen.
Other scientists have suggested this is due to delayed cell division. However, cases in the past have been classified as a type of teratoma, an unusual tumor that can contain hair, muscle, and bone.
