Covid vaccine in children: States receive one million pediatric doses by this Friday

Immunization will be applied to children aged six months or younger and younger than three years of age; Brazil has had to face a significant increase in infected people

States are to receive up to this Friday, 11th, one million pediatric doses of pfizer for children with comorbidities between 6 months and 3 years of age for protection against COVID-19🇧🇷 The information was released by Ministry of Health this Thursday 10. The announcement of the distribution comes almost two months after the National Health Surveillance Agency (anvisa) approve the use of the immunizer. In recent weeks, Brazil and the world have experienced a new wave of cases.

The pediatric doses, according to the statement of the folder, will be distributed “in a proportional and equitable way”. For São Paulo, 206,300 doses of the immunizing agent are expected to arrive. The total, however, is less than the 615,000 requested by the State Department of Health.

Currently, the covid-19 vaccination campaign in São Paulo includes all children between the ages of 3 and 4 who can take Coronavac. In September, the Butantan Institute donated 2 million doses to the state.

To date, two pediatric vaccines are available for all children: Pfizer’s, which can be given to anyone over the age of 5, and Coronavac’s, available for ages 3 to 4.

The expansion of vaccine use for non-immunocompromised children will be evaluated by the National Commission for Incorporation of Technology into SUS (Conitec), according to the Ministry of Health. According to the data in the file, 938,400 children between the ages of 3 and 4 took the first dose of the vaccine and 323,900 received the second application of the immunizer across the country.

The Ministry of Health recommends that coronavirus vaccines be given to children at the same time as the other immunizers in the vaccine calendar or at any range in the age group 6 months and up.

Increase in cases

The arrival of the pediatric vaccine in the arms of the little ones takes place in a period of resurgence of the disease and an increase in cases of covid-19 in Brazil and in other countries of the world, such as the United States and China. The Asian country, which practices the zero contamination policy, last week recorded the highest number of infected in the last six months.

According to experts, the growth could be associated with the emergence of two new sub-variants of the Ômicron variant, BQ.1 and XBB. In Brazil, state surveillance teams have already tracked the presence of this strain of the virus in new patients. In Sao Paulo, the Department of Health confirmed, on Tuesday, 9, the first death of a 72-year-old patient infected with BQ.1🇧🇷

In most cases, people who contract covid-19 have not had severe cases of the disease. Nonetheless, experts reinforce the need to wear masks indoors and update and complete the vaccination schedule for all those who may receive any covid-19 vaccinations.
