Covid: the vaccine distributed in SP is only enough for 1/3 of children with comorbidities

Pfizer doses for the age group of six months to two years were only sent by the Ministry of Health this week

Only one-third (34.9%) of children aged six months to less than three years with comorbidities will be able to be immunized in St. Paul Against the COVID-19 with the first batch transferred from the federal government. The number of Pfizer pediatric doses shipped from Ministry of Health to the state, which amounts to 206,000 doses, is insufficient to cover the entire target of São Paulo.

In São Paulo, 195,000 children match the vaccine recipient profile, according to data from the São Paulo Department of Health. Since the immunization will be completed with the application of three doses, only 68,000 children will be able to receive the immuniser. This means that, for now, 127 thousand (65.1%) will remain uncovered.

Last Thursday, the Ministry of Health announced distribution of one million doses Pfizer Pediatrics. The country has faced a new wave of the disease, with an increase in positive diagnoses and hospitalizations.

In a note, the secretariat said it continued to instruct the Ministry of Health to send new doses “to serve the entire population entitled to it”.

“The population of children aged 6 months to 2 years in the State of São Paulo is 1.3 million and it is estimated that around 195,000 have at least one comorbidity. Therefore, considering the need for three doses of immuniser, the state in paste had asked to the Ministry of Health for 615,000 doses. With the amount sent, it will only be possible to immunize 68,000 children, “informed the State of São Paulo, in a statement.

When questioned, the Ministry of Health replied that, since Thursday 10, it has been sending 1 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine to all states and the Federal District, and that the distribution has considered “not only the request of each UF (Unit of the Federation ), but also the intended target audience”.

Also according to the Ministry, for the extension of the use of the vaccine to children who do not have comorbidities, an evaluation by the National Commission for the incorporation of the technology in the SUS (Conitec) is required. The folder has not manifested when it will send new shipments.

So far, two pediatric covid-19 vaccines are available for all children: Pfizer’s, which can be applied to those over 5 years old, and Coronavac’s, which is available for children aged 3 to 4.

Currently, the vaccination campaign to protect against the coronavirus in São Paulo includes all 3- and 4-year-old children who can take Coronavac. In September, the Butantan Institute donated 2 million doses to the state.

In August of this year, Pfizer submitted a request for authorization for the use of the vaccine in children aged six months to four years to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). In September, the agency approved the request for the immunizer and its inclusion in the vaccination plan. But, in the following month, the Ministry of Health decided to limit the administration of Pfizer’s pediatrics to the public with comorbidities.
