A man who thought he was going deaf found that a piece of earplugs had been stuck in his ear for five years.

Wallace Lee, of Weymouth, England, believed his hearing problems were caused by working too long in the noisy aviation industry, or by old injuries sustained playing rugby.

Concerned, Lee decided to visit a doctor after purchasing a homemade endoscope that helped him identify a small white object in his ear.

Lee said he was surprised and was an “instant relief” when the unusual item was finally removed.

The British Royal Navy veteran believes the plug got stuck in his ear during a plane ride.

“Five years ago, when I was visiting my family in Australia, I bought these little earmuffs that you can put different accessories into depending on the noise you want to eliminate,” he said.

“One of those little pieces lodged in my ear and has been there ever since.”

He and his wife have noticed a deterioration in their hearing. Lee began to fear becoming deaf.

The retiree said he’s tried cleaning his ears several times over the years with no success. “I was at my limit,” he said.

He says the surgeon successfully removed the earplug and was reportedly “surprised” by the discovery.

🇧🇷[O médico] I initially tried to suck it… But because it had been there for so long and with the hard wax buildup in the ear, the plug wouldn’t budge,” Lee said.

“Then he took these miniature tweezers and they put up another tube in the ear canal… I could really feel it pulling, and suddenly it popped. Instantly I could feel everything in the room. The fog that had been in my head for all these years. years have gone by. I could hear perfectly fine,” Lee said.

Ear, nose and throat surgeon Neil De Zoysa told the BBC that examining one’s ears at home isn’t too harmful.

However, he urged people not to try to remove foreign objects without professional medical help, “as doing so could lead to infection or further health problems later.”
