The player injured his right ankle in Brazil’s match against Serbia
Brazil made their debut at the 2022 World Cup with a 2-0 win against Serbia on 25 November. Despite the victory, in the second half, the Brazilian striker Neymar Jr. injured his right ankle after a collision with Serbian full-back Milenkovic.
Shortly after, Neymar was replaced due to pain and received medical attention. At the end of the game, he limped into the locker room.
In a bulletin, the Brazilian team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, communicated that the player underwent tests and received the diagnosis of a ligament tear in his right ankle along with a small bone edema. For this reason, Neymar missed the squad for the match against Switzerland which took place this Monday (28).
What is the injury suffered by the attacker?
Considered a very common injury, a twist or sprain occurs when the foot moves sideways with more force than normal.
“Neymar’s injury was a sprained ankle ligament, with bone edema, being one of the most frequent injuries among footballers,” he says. Thanguy Fricoorthopaedist, professor, author of the book “Healthy parents equal healthy children”, BS in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology and MBA in People Management.
In it, the ligaments stretch and end up breaking, causing pain and local swelling. “Furthermore, you may have joint instabilities and functional incapacities, which prevent you from practicing sports,” clarifies the Dr. Marcello Annichinosports traumatologist at AACD
How is the treatment done?
The diagnosis of the lesion occurs through the anamnesis, which consists in the collection of information on what happened, together with the physical examination. If fractures or dislocations are suspected, some additional tests may also be ordered, according to Dr. Marcel.
Treatment is defined according to the degree of ligament involvement. In the case of grade 1, when the ligaments are stretched, anti-inflammatory drugs, ice, relative immobilization and physiotherapy are used, according to Dr. Tanguy.
“In grade 2, where there is partial rupture of the ligaments, treatment involves the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, ice, absolute immobilisation, and also physiotherapy. In the case of grade 3, where there is complete rupture of the ligaments, there may be a need for surgery, absolute immobilization and then physiotherapy”, adds the orthopedic surgeon.
What about recovery?
The recovery process varies depending on the severity of the case. “The recovery times are evaluated on the basis of the evolution of the rehabilitation phases. Therefore, the return to the field, possibly, will be carried out in training, before actually playing a match”, informs the traumatologist.
Orthopedist Thanguy Friço says Neymar’s injury has been classified between grade 1 and 2. “In this case, the recovery time for a normal person takes between 14 and 21 days. However, because he is a high performance, this rehabilitation is accelerated to an average of 7 to 10 days”, points out the doctor.
