Foot test
Neonatal screening, the official name of the test, must be carried out between the third and fifth day after delivery. It shouldn’t be done for more than 48 hours, to give the body time to get back to its normal rhythm and for the milk to be digested. A small blood sample is taken from the newborn’s heel, from which more than 40 diseases can be researched (in the private network), including congenital hypothyroidism, sickle cell anemia and others that can cause mental deficiency. It is a mandatory and free examination in the public network (to detect the six most common pathologies).
ear test
It is done through equipment that emits sound waves into the child’s ear and analyzes the response to the stimulus, to detect if there are hearing problems. In some cases, there may still be fluid in your child’s ear and the test needs to be repeated. The test, which is mandatory, is usually performed while still in hospital, before discharge: babies born at home must undergo newborn hearing screening before reaching the age of 3 months.
eye exam
You know that red glare that appears in someone’s eye when you take a photo with flash? It is a sign that the light has reached the retina, passing all structures of the eye, and reflected back. This test, mandatory and carried out in the maternity ward, is essential for the early diagnosis of diseases that compromise the visual axis, such as congenital cataracts and glaucoma or even cancer.
