The birth is considered safe until the pregnancy is 41 weeks and 6 days. Many doctors wait this time for the woman to go into labor naturally. In the 42nd week, however, the risks for the baby increase and it is customary to resort to induction or caesarean section. So, if you’re already 40 weeks pregnant, which is the calculation the World Health Organization uses to calculate your due date, and still no babies have been born, don’t worry. In low-risk pregnancies it is normal to wait a little longer.
From 40 weeks of pregnancy what changes is monitoring. It will be done, on average, every three days, to find out if the baby is well and if there is enough amniotic fluid. In general, ultrasound and cardiotocography are performed, which analyze the baby’s heartbeat and contractions. It is also important that you are aware of your child’s movements.
If it doesn’t move, moves less than usual, or loses blood or fluid, tell your doctor. But, since he may only be sleeping, do a test: eat something or walk a bit.
42 weeks pregnant – understand the risks
Studies show that letting go at 42 weeks can pose risks to the baby. This is because the placenta has already aged well and can compromise the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. In addition, there is an increased danger of meconium release (the first stool), which can be aspirated and lead to death. Cases of respiratory problems and infections are also on the rise.
You need to make sure your baby is not in pain and that the placenta continues to feed him. The important thing is that, both by normal birth and by cesarean section, your baby is born healthy, at the ideal and propitious moment for this.
