Itchy Scalp: What Could It Be?

Stress, anxiety and allergy are among the agents that cause itching in this region.

You know that itchy scalp? In addition to signaling that there may be dirt, it can also indicate the presence of other problems.

Itchy Scalp: What Could It Be?

According to Dr. Luciana Passonitrichologist and hair transplant specialist, itchy scalp can arise due to factors such as anxiety, stress, fungal infections, seborrheic dermatitis, lice or allergies, and can be accompanied by other symptoms (redness, tenderness, scaling or irritation of the skin).

The specialist warns that it is not common to feel itching or pain in the scalp and that it is essential to be careful when scratching the region, as the nails make a “hole” in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter which can generate an inflammation called folliculitis capillary.

Inflammation can be mistaken for a pimple. However, the doctor explains that there are no pimples on the scalp and that folliculitis is a treatable condition.

«The cure is done with antibiotics and shampoo manipulated with an antiseptic is used, it takes time, it requires patience and perseverance. It is essential to consult a specialist doctor, because the sooner the treatment is done, the better it is for the patient», says the trichologist.

Some other measures may also be important in dealing with hair folliculitis, such as avoiding washing your hair with hot water and using mild shampoos that do not harm the scalp skin.

After the treatment, to prevent the inflammation from returning, the doctor says that the ideal is to keep the scalp clean and dry, remove shampoo and conditioner well when washing, do not sleep with wet hair, reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages and of fatty foods and fight stress.
