How does the guardian-pet relationship influence the welfare of the animal?

“The relationship between caretaker and pet greatly influences the well-being of the animal, especially from an emotional point of view, since pets that do not receive attention, for example, can present certain disorders such as anxiety and even depression. Therefore, it is crucial to build a good relationship between tutor and pet.

So can pets develop anxiety disorders or depression too? How to identify a pet’s emotional state and offer support?

“Yes, they can develop both. Be aware of changes in daily behavior and changes in habits, such as prostration, lack of interest in playing or walking, lack of appetite…these may be symptoms and indicate that it is time to seek a vet.

Why Do Routine Changes Have a Greater Impact on Pets? What to do to minimize this stress?

“Pets are very sensitive to changes in environment and routine, especially felines. Changes should be planned as much as possible so that there is an adaptation plan. For example, in the event of a move, take the animal several times to see the new home before the final move. Your vet can help plan these changes so that the animal is as little impacted as possible.”

Popularly, cats are seen as more independent animals, is this reflected in their ability to deal with humans?

“The way dogs and cats express emotions is different, but contrary to what it might seem, cats are just as sensitive to change as dogs.”

How does inattention affect cats and dogs? How important is it to create quality moments with your pet?

“Lack of attention to both totally affects animal welfare. Therefore, it is very important to create moments of connection between pets and their guardians, in which there is an exchange of oxytocin between everyone, which is important for humans and pets, generating positive emotions.

Gestures are worth more than words

Perhaps this is one of the most common phrases among people, which makes perfect sense when we think about the animal kingdom. For owners of pets, sometimes a simple glance is enough to understand what is happening. Rafael comments on everyday situations.

Dogs and cats have acute senses: how can sounds do them good or harm? Why are fireworks so scary?

“Any environmental change arouses the interest of pets, such as smells, sounds and visual stimuli. If sounds are present in good times, they will be “remembered” as signs of good emotions as well. As for fireworks, the noises are usually very loud, strong and the smell generated is of gunpowder, bringing fear, fright and insecurity, because it is usually not a common and known noise. It is important that, at this moment, the guardian approaches the animal, calms it and gives it security”.

Why do some pets stay with their guardians during activities, such as a meditation session?

“Usually, at the first moment, pets are curious to understand what humans are doing at that moment. But they can tell if their owners enter a meditative, relaxed state, which can draw them close.
