The story of a young man who forgot a tampon for two years has gone viral on TikTok. Gynecologist comments
A 22-year-old girl has gone viral on TikTok after recounting a rather unpleasant experience she had as a teenager in a video. “When I accidentally left a tampon on for two years, but I was literally just a teenager,” says Melanie Galeaz.
The situation soon had repercussions: in less than a week, the post had surpassed 14 million views, as well as accumulating more than 25,000 comments, most of which asked Melanie to tell the whole story. Then, she returned to the social network and told what happened.
How did the tampon stay in there for so long?
The young woman said that, as a child, she was bitten by a tick and showed all the symptoms of Lyme disease, but the diagnosis was never confirmed. Years later, already in middle school, the student began to notice that something was wrong.
“In my second year, I started having all these pains in my body and really bad things happening over there. So I went to a doctor, but I didn’t mention the intimate problems – which I know is my fault. But the doctor in a he kind of ignored me, it was mean. It was scary and I was like 14. This is really disgusting and embarrassing, so I didn’t want to deal with it, but I was hoping it had something to do with Lyme disease, which I could ignore with the medication and it would pass,” has explained.
The meds improved Melanie’s pain, but her vaginal situation remained problematic. After ignoring the problem for two years, the young woman decided to see a doctor again. It was then that a gynecologist was surprised by what he saw. “She sighed in surprise and said ‘you have electrodes stuck horizontally under your cervix.’ I was like ‘what?!'” he said in the video.
Tiktoker also provided more details
According to Melanie, the doctor didn’t seem to believe the tampon had been there for two years, but the young woman said it was during that time that she experienced any symptoms. She also reported that it was not easy to remove the tampon, mainly because it was dissolving inside her body, and therefore kept breaking down. Her followers have even asked about the smell and she has assured that she knows how to mask the smell.
Before finishing the video, Melanie said she already had three tampons stuck at once. “During that two year period, I took out a tampon and another one came, and I have no idea how long it sat there. So I had one inside me for two years, one that was an unknown period, and another one that stayed for about 8 hours,” he said.
Internal absorbent care
The gynecologist of the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, Dr. Mariana Rosario, says that the pad should be changed every two hours at most. “Because there is a risk that blood comes into contact with the vagina, which is an environment extremely rich in microorganisms, causing toxic shock syndrome. In this condition the bacteria are able to reach the bloodstream and the patient enters a kind of systemic infection,” she warns.
The tampon doesn’t necessarily have to be very deep to be forgotten, explains the doctor. When it gets wet, whether due to the menstrual flow itself or some external factor, it becomes easier to be pushed to the bottom of the vaginal canal. Incidentally, this can also happen with condoms during intercourse, adds Dr. Mariana.
“The patient will never be able to find the pad again if she doesn’t have the opportunity to mobilize the vaginal region and locate the object with her finger”, says the specialist. Additionally, she cautions that the act of placing one tampon on top of another also pushes the first one, making it difficult to remove later.
The gynecologist indicates the main symptoms that indicate some irregularity with intimate health:
- I unload;
- strong smell;
- Colic;
- Pain in sexual intercourse;
- Colic even without relationship and outside the menstrual period;
- vaginal discharge with an unusual smell;
- Bleeding.
If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor.
