British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, known for being a pioneer of punk style and one of fashion’s biggest icons, died on Thursday (29), aged 81.
Also known for her environmental activism, Westwood died “peacefully and surrounded” by her family in Clapham, England, according to her branding.
“The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better,” the designer’s company wrote on social media.
Westwood’s husband and creative partner, Andreas Kronthaler, thanked the designer and confirmed they had “worked to the end” alongside him.
British culture secretary Michelle Donelan called Westwood a “commanding figure”. Politics also highlighted that “their punk style rewrote the rulebook in the ’70s.”
Symbol of punk rock, the British designer was responsible for dressing the members of the Sex Pistols and her creations were used by various personalities, such as the American model Dita Von Teese and Princess Eugenie. .
