The online protocol system went into effect at the end of December
Faced with so many requests for citizenship, the Portuguese authorities have allied themselves with technology to facilitate the conduct of the processes. Announced for December, the online protocol system has come into force for those seeking a definitive passport to reside in European territory.
However, far from being “easier”, the journey follows the same procedural instructions and now relies only on the digital delivery of the documents by the interested parties or their lawyers, a job that is currently carried out by employees of the State Offices Civil in Portugal. (CRC).
“Many people are not understanding this new way of delivering documents, so we must clarify that this possibility is only a means to facilitate the work of the relevant bodies and reduce the need to archive physical documents. Citizenship via the internet feels like it’s something judged by a robot, or some artificial intelligence, and we know that’s not true. If there is any doubt about the digital information, the original documents will continue to be requested by the CRCs,” explains Dr. Rodrigo Lopes, Portuguese-Brazilian lawyer and CEO of DNA Citizenshiplegal advice acting in cases of Portuguese nationality.
Different stages of this process
Made up of several stages, the process of applying for Portuguese citizenship can be a challenge for those looking to develop it on their own.
Having become valid as a right for the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens, as well as for the married and cohabiting spouses of such citizens, through naturalization, the processes require the location of the Portuguese birth certificate, search for Brazilian certificates throughout the family, issuing documents, filling out forms, legalizations and filing applications in Portugal.
“It’s a journey that requires a lot of work and knowledge, so having the support of specialized legal advice can make all the difference. There are many documents to collect and practical experience is needed to facilitate progress. For those wishing to establish residence in the country, it is essential to consult this possibility. Currently, more than 25 million Brazilians are of Portuguese origin and could be entitled to this definitive passport,” adds the specialist.
