The value is far from the 2019 record, in the midst of the pandemic
On Thursday (5), a 212-kilogram tuna sold for 36.04 million yen (about R$1 million) in an auction at Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan.
The sale took place during the traditional New Year’s Auction in the Japanese capital and the price was paid in one bluefin tuna. The buyer was the sushi restaurant Onodera Group, together with the Japanese wholesaler Yamayuki.
The record price remains that of 2019, when a tuna was sold for 3.1 million dollars (R$16.6 million). The sum was paid by Kiyoshi Kimura, known as the “King of tuna” in Tokyo, who has always paid very high prices for the fish.
