Artigas Coffee
The 1940s house hosted the modernist architect Vilanova Artigas. Some original furniture is exhibited in the room, including a small library with books on Artigas and others that were part of his private collection. It is also possible to access the LPs from the architect’s personal collection, organized in the small shelf built into the wall of the fireplace in white-painted exposed brick – records by Gal and Mozart are among the titles that can be accessed from the “visite”.
Walls of glass supported by blue-painted metal frames reveal the café (which doubles as a restaurant) at the back of the house. The courtyard feel, with the added charm of a garden that looks hand-drawn, enchants guests, whether they are new to the architect’s work or not. Dishes such as the Mignon Paulo Mendes (mignon tournedour with potato dauphinoise and Di Supino mushroom sauce) and the Picadinho do Chef (minced rump steak a la chef accompanied by farofa with Sicilian lemon, rice and chips) deserve applause. Gastronomy with the simplicity of a modernist soul, with solutions capable of satisfying the most varied tastes. For dessert, don’t even think about skipping the lemon tart.
Rua Barão de Jaceguai, 1151, tel. 11 3854 5636. Wed-Sun 12-5pm. Dinner: Friday and Saturday from 19:30 to 22:30.
hollow bar
An almost secret bar in the Jardins district. Perfect for gatherings in a 1930’s home with minimalist décor. The idea of an intimate bar was born with the renovation of the house, a family heirloom of one of the initial partners. The house has been restored to its original forms and a basement discovered during the renovation has become the most contested location in the bar. The house seats about 35 people and, on the hottest days, you can sit at the tables outside or have a drink on the bench in the courtyard. It’s rare to find restaurants in São Paulo with such a welcoming atmosphere.
The Cava Bar serves classic drinks such as the Fitzgerald (gin, sugar syrup, lemon juice and angostura bitters) and signature drinks such as the Bitter Giuseppe (Cynar, classic carpano vermouth, fresh lemon juice, coffee, orange angostura bitters) and Gin Pesto (basil, gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup). Highlights from the menu include the Tortano (bread with smoked pepper sausage) and the Veggie Sandwich made with Mushrooms of Paris, zucchini, and Brie cheese.
Rua Guarará, 565, underground. Wednesday and Thursday 18.30 to 00.00, Friday and Saturday 18.30 to 1.00.
Midheaven House
The house from the 1940s, in the Bela Vista neighborhood, named after the highest point in the birth chart, is charming right from the entrance, with deck chairs available for “guests”. Inside, be prepared for decorative surprises that feel like a friend’s house: the armchair by the fireplace in the foyer, the festively arranged tables, and the welcoming lighting. The renovation of the house on Rua dos Franceses, classified by the Municipal Council for the Conservation of the Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the City of São Paulo (Conpresp), took a year to revitalize and was worth every stroke of paint on the walls.
On Sundays, the best option is brunch with sourdough bread, yogurt with fruit, muffins and specialty coffees. On Thursdays, the night of wine and tarot cards is a popular attraction. On that day, in addition to the usual house menu, you can choose a combo that includes a question asked on the house tarocchino + a glass of wine.
The snacks contended for at home to accompany the drinks menu are Mezze (hommus with dry curds) and tapioca balls served with pepper jelly. Among the dishes, options like Baião de Dois and Moqueca de Banana da Terra are a hit.
Rua dos Franceses, 258, Bela Vista, tel.: 11 95594 6045. Thursday and Friday 5pm to midnight, Saturday 12pm to midnight, Sunday 11am to 8pm.
