Despite Redome being the third largest database in the world, nearly 50% of registered people are not found when needed; find out how to become a donor
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned on Wednesday 11, with veto, the law approved by the National Congress which aims to facilitate the finding of people registered in the National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (Redome).
Although the National Registry is the third largest donor database of bone marrow in the world – with over 5 million members – almost 50% of volunteers are not found when necessary. “Between January 2021 and March 2022, 18,174 contact requests were made and, of this total, 7,576 donors were not located. Thus, in that period, no less than 42% of contact attempts failed,” said the project rapporteur. , Senator Alessandro Vieira (PSDB-SE), to Agência Senado. This can happen, for example, if the registered person has changed his telephone number or address.
To facilitate contact with donors, the new law allows, in the event of failure of the first contact, for blood establishments to request recent data from public bodies, public service concessionaires and credit protection services. The spouse and relatives up to the third degree of Redome members can also be contacted.
The rapporteur proposes that the deadline for providing the requested information be three working days, with the possibility of a fine of between one and 100 minimum wages per day of delay. The amount collected will be divided between the National Cancer Institute (Inca) and the Ministry of Health. “It is unacceptable that bone marrow donation is made unfeasible by the mere lack of contact with a possible donor,” Vieira said.
