This is a problem that affects 15% of the world’s population, according to WHO; better understand the topic
For many people, talking about infertility is still taboo, but the problem is common and there is a cure. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of the world’s population is sterile. This percentage represents 48 million couples and 186 million people worldwide. In Brazil, the Brazilian Society of Human Reproduction says numbers reach 8 million.
In this sense, when a couple tries to get pregnant, but fails, different tests are performed and different ways to understand why this happens. One of the main questions related to fertility is whether or not it is hereditary how it can affect the attempts of the couple.
Problems like polycystic ovary, for example, usually appear in the sisters and daughters of women with the problem. Endometriosis, a disease linked to the excessive growth of the tissue lining the uterus, also has a high probability of developing in first-degree relatives.
There are also other factors that contribute to infertility such as cancer treatments, lifestyle and environmental factors. Yet, according to Dr. Matheus Roque, human reproduction specialist, this is much more common in men than in women.
“There are causes and genetic factors of infertility. So, for example, in the case of men, there is azoospermia, that is, when the patient has no sperm. Sometimes because the man was born with this predisposition, not necessarily find out the factor, but from the first spermiogram he does, azoospermia is already diagnosed”, he explains.
Roque points out that many people believe that infertility may have arisen after some event in their life. However, often this discovery occurs only after human reproduction treatments.
As for women who are born infertile, the specialist says that, like men, they can be born with a predisposition to early menopause, also known as ovarian failure.
Habits that can lead to infertility
In women, infertility can be linked to excessive caffeine consumption, high levels of stress, smoking, being overweight, and strenuous exercise. While in men, it can be associated with using a laptop on your lap, tight underwear, excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption.
How to find out if I’m infertile or not?
In the case of women, lab and transvaginal tests can help identify the problem. “Having medical supervision is essential, as is consulting a human reproduction specialist after 6 months of unsuccessful attempts to conceive”, concludes the specialist.
In the case of men, the spermogram is the best way to assess whether there is azoospermia. It is a laboratory test capable of evaluating the condition, quality and quantity of sperm present in the individual.
So if you and your partner are going through this, it’s essential that you seek specialized professional help, okay?
