Expert explains the causes of the problem and what to do to combat and prevent the emergence of new brands

If there’s one thing that still bothers a lot of women, it’s the emergency of stretch marks in the skin. The problem, caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers, leaves white and reddish scars that can impact the self-esteem of those who have them. “In general, they [estrias] they form in areas where the skin has been overstretched or suddenly stretched,” says dermatologist Dr. Bárbara Carneiro.

According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), stretch marks reach 40% to 70% of women and appear frequently during pregnancy, among other situations. “The most commonly treated patients are those who are in the growth phase, with excessive muscle growth due to excessive exercise, placement of subcutaneous implants, obesity, and long-term use of topical, oral, or injectable corticosteroids,” she lists.

Prevention

As it is associated with lifestyle factors, the stretch marks can be prevented through healthy habits, such as the consumption of natural and nutritious foods. Therefore, the doctor highlights the main ways to avoid the appearance of scars:

  • Eat a balanced diet to avoid becoming overweight;
  • Moisturize your skin and consume water properly;
  • Practice regular physical activity;
  • Invest in foods rich in vitamin C,
  • Perform massages, such as lymphatic drainage.

Treatment

The treatments available for stretch marks can be very effective, especially if started early. However, it matters consult a specialist to make a correct diagnosis. According to the dermatologist, the main procedures against stretch marks are:

  • Retinoic acid peel;
  • plasma jet;
  • Lasers such as etherea or fractionated CO2;
  • microneedles,
  • Carboxytherapy.

What are the hardest stretch marks to treat?

Contrary to what some might imagine, even the colors of the stretch marks directly interfere with the treatment. Scars can be white, reddish, and even purple. As the doctor explains, the shade of the marks indicates whether they are old or recent.

“Because they have not yet gone through a healing process, red stretch marks are much easier to treat, with the possibility of almost total removal. White stretch marks are old, i.e. they are no longer inflamed. Therefore, they are more difficult to get rid of,” he concludes.
