How to adapt the brain at the end of the holidays? Expert answers

“If you haven’t gotten into the rhythm yet, you can rest easy: this is natural. It takes about a week, but gradually the brain understands that it needs to get back to work,” says Dr. Fernando Gomes, neurosurgeon and neuroscientist at the Hospital das Clínicas of SP.

According to the expert, it is in hypothalamus – region of the brain that controls the various biological clocks of the organism -, that the compound of a set of nerve cells with about 10 thousand neurons forms a command center called the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

“It contains all the information about what rhythm the body should follow, from how hungry we will feel, through sleep regulation, temperature, blood pressure, bowel function and other vital functions such as sexual appetite,” he says.

lazy brain

During the holiday period it is normal to wake up and sleep later, change the menu or the calendar of appointments. The problem is that our brain perceives these changes and, to adapt to them, our thousands of neurons receive different information about the new routine, such as different schedules and relaxed eating patterns.

“That’s why, when we return to normal life, our body reacts negatively and doesn’t return as quickly to the state it should be in, leaving us more lazy,” explains the specialist.

Like this, try to give your brain some time to adjust after the holidays. According to Dr. Fernando this process tends to take only a few days. Also, during this period, it is important not to overload yourself with so many activities.

“There is no need to invest and demand more from your brain than it is capable of giving you now. After all, it is useless to take a few days off, but keep your mind stressed, think endlessly about work and dread returning to routine, ”she advises.

Tips to put into practice

To help you resume post-holiday activities without suffering, the neurosurgeon has prepared some valuable tips to leave the body — and the brain — perfectly readjusted during this time. Look down:

  • Try to go to bed an hour before your intended sleep time;
  • Avoid coffee or stimulants after 5pm;
  • Do not overdo the evening meals;
  • Avoid physical exercises after 21:00;
  • Turn off your TV, computer, and cell phone earlier than usual;
  • Start over progressively. Start solving the simplest tasks;
  • Give value to breaks and meals,
  • Don’t spend many hours focused on one thing. This way, your mind will be more inclined to adapt.
