Understand

This syndrome occurs when the individual is afraid or has difficulty going to the bathroom in public places or places that have many people, according to the doctor.

“Usually you end up having this problem of going to the bathroom and when you come back people ask you ‘why did it take you so long?'” explains the doctor.

“It can also develop due to some trauma. Sometimes, in childhood, during school, the person would go to the bathroom and others would make a joke or a joke when they would come back. This can cause this problem,” she adds.

Scratches

Initially, when the individual limits the desire to go to the toilet, he begins to present some symptoms, such as an increase in the amount of gas, bloating, irritability, headache, among others.

“If he continues to do it several times, the risk of certain diseases such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures increases. In some situations, the stools are very dry and he may have to go to the hospital to have an intestinal lavage”, specifies the specialist.

Treatment

In most cases, treatment is based on the use of drugs that stimulate bowel movement and the adoption of a diet rich in fiber. In addition, psychotherapy is also important, as the doctor says it helps the patient find out why he has developed the problem and treat it.

The doctor. Gustavo also gives another piece of advice for anyone facing this problem. According to him, to overcome the phobia, it is interesting to use public toilets at less crowded times.

“In shopping centres, for example, there are large toilets, but at certain times of the day they are emptier. In this way the person can concentrate, given that there is not a large influx of people in the room. This is one of the mechanisms that we help to start trying and then move on to a normal coexistence”, he explains.
