Bathroom: find out why we are more creative in the shower

Have you ever had a great idea in the bathroom? The expert explains what makes us more creative during the activity

nothing like a shower relaxing to recharge your batteries after a long day of work and stress, right? But in addition to helping you relax, did you know that this moment can also stimulate creativity?

Bathroom: find out why we are more creative in the shower

Right! It’s not uncommon to hear reports of people having great ideas while in the shower. Singer Ludmilla, for example, revealed in an interview with Sabrina Sato in 2020 that most of her songs began to be written in the shower.

“I always take my cell phone to the bathroom and leave it here, because sometimes I’m in the shower, singing, showering, and out of nowhere inspiration comes,” she said.

What causes the “shower effect”?

Postdoctoral neuroscientist, Prof. Dr. Fabiano de Abreu Agrela, explains that one of the reasons for this “effect” is the fact that the bath, especially the hot one, is a relaxing action, which increases the production of dopamine.

According to him, the bath induces the release of the neurotransmitter which — among its various functions — increases creativity, making ideas flow. “The level of the creative impulse is in agreement with the activity of the dopaminergic pathways in the limbic system. And the bath is a trigger for the increase in dopamine flow,” she explains.

Furthermore, since it is a simple daily gesture, the bathroom requires little attention, leaving our mind “free” to wander and make new associations, activating different areas of the brain.

“Normally, our attention tends to be directed outward, which is natural and instinctive. This makes us focus on daily addictions,” she clarifies.

So if you need to “clear your mind” to solve problems or simply reduce tiredness after a hard day, maybe taking a nice shower could come in handy.
