Alectomy: Understanding the procedure that caused the woman to lose part of her nose

Beautician Elielma Carvalho Braga has lost part of her nose after undergoing surgery in Aparecida de Goiânia, in the metropolitan region of Goiânia (GO). The dentist Igor Leonardo Soares Nascimento, responsible for the operation, was indicted by the Civil Police for having practiced the medical profession illegally and causing serious bodily harm. The procedure, called an alectomy, cannot be done by dentists.

The victim had to undergo several surgeries to reconstruct his nose due to a process of necrosis, which left his nose deformed and with many scars. Also, some procedures were required for Elielma to regain the ability to breathe through her nostrils. In his defense, the dentist claims that the problem was not due to the surgery, but caused by a syndrome developed after taking medication. He also claims to have given all the support to the patient after the accident.

alectomy

Alectomy is the reduction of the bridge of the nose, and is one of the phases of rhinoplasty surgery, explains Dr. Thiago Marra, plastic surgeon and professor in the field of rhinoplasty. “The rhinoplasty operation must have more than twenty stages, between the displacement and the removal of the septum. The alectomy is just one of them,” he says.

He points out that, in addition to unsatisfactory cosmetic results, all plastic surgery procedures are prone to infection and necrosis, or devascularization of tissue. “In the case of rhinoplasty, since it is a contaminated region, it is common to have an infection, regardless of how much antibiotic prophylaxis is used,” warns the specialist.

If there is an infection, the patient will feel redness, pain and pus. In the event of necrosis, tissue death causes a wound, which will generate a scar. One of the first signs is a change in skin color, says the plastic surgeon. “In the immediate postoperative period, this skin turns pale and white, then necrosis appears, which will form a black layer of scar from the dead tissue. Debridement of the region,” he explains.

The practitioner warns that not only alectomy and other rhinoplasty procedures can cause necrosis. This is because fillers can also lead to tissue death. “The filling, depending on whether it was done wrong, can embolize, that is, it can block the blood vessel. And then this blocked blood vessel will cause necrosis,” he says.

dentist is indicted

The beautician who was the victim of the complication filed a lawsuit for moral and aesthetic damages against the dentist and filed a complaint against him with the 1st DP Aparecida de Goiânia. On Friday (20), the investigation conducted by the Civil Police was completed and transmitted to the Court of Justice of Goiás.

The delegate responsible for the investigation, Luiza Veneranda, concluded that the professional does not have the technical knowledge necessary to perform the alectomy. You also underlined that you assumed the risk of very serious personal injury and the illegal practice of medicine, dentistry or pharmaceuticals, provided for by article 282 of the penal code.

Igor Leonardo Soares Nascimento continues to work pending a court decision. In a statement, he said he has been a dental surgeon for 19 years, a specialist in dental implants, orthodontics and functional jaw orthopedics, oral aesthetics and advanced facial attunement.

He also reiterated that the beautician’s complication is not due to the surgery. “The problem in Elielma’s case was a reaction that occurred after the procedure called Nicolau Syndrome, which is a rare worsening of blood vessels after the use of injectable drugs. he has declared.
