Time for the Crown to wrap up: Why Helena Bonham Carter, who played the Queen’s sister on the show, advocated its closure

The first season of The Crown was released in 2016 and immediately caused a sensation: the creators of the series reproduced in a very plausible way the historical details of the ascension of Elizabeth II to the British throne. Since then, each new season has caused a scandal, and everyone wonders: when will the designers stop? Actress Helena Bonham Carter allowed herself to be candid.

At the moment, The Crown has 6 seasons, and the last one turned out to be one of the loudest: it is dedicated to the death of Princess Diana and the events leading up to the tragedy in the royal family. Corona’s ratings are constantly skyrocketing. Audiences are also interested to know if the actors chosen for roles in the upcoming series are similar to the prototypes and, of course, how the writers interpret the intricacies of connections within the world’s most talked about monarchy.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II at the end of 2022 posed the question squarely: many were convinced that, for ethical reasons, the filming of the show should be stopped. However, it doesn’t look like Netflix will – on the contrary, there are rumors that when it comes to the events of ‘MagZit’, Meghan Markle will be playing herself!

The most famous British actress, winner of many awards, Helena Bonham Carter, starred in the third and fourth seasons of “The Crown” – she got the role of the rebellious sister of Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, who in his youth was called “the English rose”. The fate of Margaret is tragic: the origin did not allow her to marry her beloved, and the princess got into serious trouble, delivering a lot of headaches to her cautious parents.

Helena Bonham Carter has aristocratic roots: she admitted that one of her relatives, Mark Bonham Carter, had a stormy love affair in real life with a princess who happened to be played by her niece. So the actress had inside information about the character and habits of her heroine, which allowed her to successfully embody her image on the screen.

“I was on that show and loved my episodes,” Helena said in a recent interview. “But things are different now.”

Bonham Carter is convinced that the series, which began as a historical drama, is now dangerously close to reality and current events, “crashed into the present”.

“I have to be careful what I say, but I don’t think the creators of The Crown should go on,” the Princess Margaret singer said.

The actress has previously expressed the same sentiment, but she did it with more gentleness: she drew Netflix’s attention to the fact that they “have a moral responsibility to make viewers understand that The Crown is a drama and a fiction, not a documentary.”

Is it time for The Crown to end?

Yes, the creators go too far

No, I wonder what’s next

His fears were caused by the attitude of young viewers towards the show – many were sure that all the events presented in the series really happened. What’s up: and mature fans of the series took the “Crown” for some kind of investigation, where all episodes are based on facts. Unfortunately (or fortunately) that’s not the case – the series’ historical plot is seasoned with a good dose of fiction and a free interpretation of the facts.

But the show’s ratings aren’t dropping, they’re still discussing it and waiting for new episodes, which means the creators are unlikely to abandon a successful project…
