Polydactyly: What is the condition of Marvvila, from BBB 23?

The singer revealed that she was born with the problem and that other members of her family also have the extra toes.

During a conversation at the BBB 23 academy, on TV Globo, Marvvilla said to the confinement colleague Richard who was born with an extra finger on each hand. “This right here is a finger,” he said, showing the biomedical doctor that fingers were born on the sides of the hands, near the little finger.

According to the singer, several people in her family were born with the condition, which is called polydactyly. “Come on: my grandfather, my mother, my mother’s children, my mother’s sister, my cousins, my cousins’ children. Very strong genetics,” she listed.

Comparing the extra fingers on both hands, Marvvila said they were larger and she had had a procedure to remove them, but she wasn’t entirely happy with the result. “This here was what was left, but he still left a lot. If he would have left it the same as this, it would have been fine. My brother took it off now, you can take it off at the dermatologist,” she said.

In the chat, the former The Voice confessed that she was still ashamed of the condition and that she wished she could get what was left of her extra toe before being confined to the reality show, but, according to her, she didn’t have time.

“I’m dying of embarrassment. At the last minute I texted the dermatologist and said ‘can you pry that pinky off?’ Then she ‘pulls’. But there was no time, it passed like this and I was already here, “she began. “Ah, what to do, when I get out of here I shoot”, she finished.

WHAT IS POLYDACTYLY?

Second Doctor Marcus Vinicius, plastic surgeon and professor of Medicine at Unifran, polydactyly is a disorder in which the individual has an increased number of fingers on the hands or feet, which can be six or more fingers. “This condition can only affect the hands and even just the feet”, specifies the specialist.

The disease is caused by a genetic problem. “It’s an inherited condition that appears in multiple generations of the same family, and parents can pass it on to their children,” says the doctor.

However, Dr. Marcus Vinícius says that this problem can also develop due to changes during pregnancy, in the development period of the hands and limbs, but it is not that common.

TREATMENT

Generally, a surgical procedure is done to remove the problem. However, according to the specialist, the treatment varies according to the anatomical problems.

“The extra toes may have only skin and soft parts or they may be fully formed, containing bones and joints. That’s what determines the treatment,” he says.

For extra fingers without bone formation and joints, the treatment is easier. For those with these parts, the operation is more complex. “This joint can be shared with another finger that is considered normal or it can even be extra. If it is a shared joint, this surgery is more complex than if it were not,” describes the doctor.

Most of the time, this condition does not seriously affect the functionality of the hand or foot, i.e. it is not harmful to health. Despite this, the plastic surgeon warns that it can cause aesthetic discomfort and affect individuals’ self-esteem.
