Sustainability, colors of the year and multifunctional furniture are some of the trends appearing at the ABCasa fair, which takes place between 7 and 11 February
Staying at home has become synonymous with work, study and even play and has brought to light the need for comfort, security and privacy, even after the pandemic. The ABCasa Fair, which takes place from 7 to 11 February, at the Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo, brings the trends that will accompany the houses. Check out the main ones below!
Pantone color of the year and trendy color palette

The modern style enhances the basics and natural traits. In this way fibers, glass, concrete, metals and raw wood will be highlighted with the essence of a tone also inspired by nature: Viva Magenta (18-1750). According to Pantone Color Expert in Brazil, Blanca Lliahnne, the inspiration for choosing the color of the year 2023 comes from a bright natural dye, carmine red, produced by cochineal insects native to Mexico.
“Colour brings us courage and determination towards different times from the reality of before. When we come into contact with this hue, we are entering another dimension, which makes a parallel with the metaverse, as a source of creation, a space for creativity, which is nice to keep in mind in disruptive times,” he points out.
Its impact tone can be applied to different elements, bringing liveliness to neutral and dull environments, without the need for major structural modifications. This is what Anderson Passos, executive director of ABCasa Fair, affirms, who adds that, in environments or in decorative details, magenta can also be used to convey vigor, warmth and intensity.
When it comes to choosing colors for accessories and details, architect Tiago Adriel recommends primaries. “From a color psychology perspective, the three primary colors, red, blue and yellow, represent the body, mind and our emotions, respectively. Being highly saturated, they add a playful charm to a space, bringing with them a unmistakable energy. Anything painted in a primary color creates a conversational focal point in a room.”
Even the trend of the year follows a monochromatic line, with the appearance of a deep and melancholy room, all in the same color, from the walls to the furniture and fabrics. In keeping with more shocking themes, gothic styles are also making a comeback.
Sustainability (can and should be) in everything!
Mitigating human impact on the environment is a major agenda and must remain the focus of modern behavior. Therefore, for the benefit of the next generations, alternatives of circular type design: the one designed to be rethought. Between ecological materials, Worth mentioning: cork, aluminum, rattan and wicker.
“We all want to be more aware of our design choices and decorate our homes with objects that positively benefit our well-being, as well as that of our planet. At the ABCasa Fair it is possible to see several of them together”, explains Tiago Adriel, architect and speaker of the panel Talks, at the ABCasa fair, entitled Visual Merchandising – Decoration and Luxury Market.
For him, the sustainable factor is no longer a tendency to become permanent. Therefore, the use of materials that do not harm the environment, such as natural dyed fabrics and pieces developed by recyclable itemsthey are the way to make the creative process more sustainable and ecologically correct.
Unlike its glossy counterparts, cork is a cheap material. Its natural brown color conveys an earthy feel – instantly making people feel more relaxed – while its textured appearance adds texture, warmth and coziness. And aluminum, which is infinitely recyclable, creates a sleek, shiny, contemporary finish. According to Adriel, the key to ensuring the space doesn’t feel sterile is to mix aluminum with warmer hues, such as those found in wood and magenta.
Multifunctional furniture is on the rise
“Another key point for 2023 is the multifunctional and modular furnitureallowing greater dynamism in the environments e make it easier to change layoutssays Ariel. ‘With trends shifting from open plan to broken plan and back again, we need the flexibility to change up our spaces whenever we want,’ she adds.
“I think the bet will be, for example, modular furniture, such as a sofa. Similar to building blocks, life-size, it is sufficient to separate the units to reconfigure a large sofa into two smaller ones, and thus completely reinvent the room”.
layered lighting
The demand for devices that don’t consist of a bunch of switches and buttons brings the usability aspect back to the fore and thus creates the challenge for manufacturers to simplify highly complicated technology as much as possible, at least in terms of appearance.
According to the expert, after color, lighting is the second most important design element in any home. “In light of technological and coy advances, lighting has taken on many new forms – different materials, sculptural shapes and beautiful colors – but what we are seeing more and more is an increase in layering and, in particular, the emergence of the wall “.
The easiest way to have layered lighting is to use everything three types of lighting: ambient, highlight and task. “Try to apply ambient, accent, and activity lighting where you can, but don’t force all three into spaces where you don’t need them,” reflects Adriel.
Layered lighting is achieved when the entire room has an overall glow, with no dark spaces, and the lights are even brighter with focused light, whether on the walls or tables.
