Greek actress Loukia Papadaki spoke about her memories of visiting Ikaria during her student years, describing an island drastically different from how it appears today. Speaking during an interview with Sofia Konstantinidou on the ERTNews show 4 Seasons, the performer took a mental trip back to a time when reaching the destination required a long journey and the beaches remained nearly empty.
Papadaki explained that traveling to Ikaria in those days felt like visiting another planet, both literally and metaphorically. She noted that it took considerable courage to make the trip because reaching New York was easier than reaching Ikaria, with the ferry journey lasting 13 hours regardless of passenger preferences.
Reflecting on the simple pleasures of her youth, the actress said that being very young meant finding great joy in sitting on the ferry deck and feeling the wind blow. She remarked that life at the time was much simpler than it is today, adding that while past conditions were less advanced, she was not convinced that modern advancements are necessarily better.

Papadaki also shared her recollections of Armenistis, describing the area as a vast, beautiful beach that once resembled the Sahara Desert surrounded by sea. She said that not even a single seagull walked across the sand in those years, contrasting that solitude with the busy destination it has become today.
She confessed that she does not know what Armenistis looks like now and admitted that she is afraid to find out how much it may have changed.
Addressing how holiday habits have evolved, Papadaki criticized the modern insistence on rigid schedules, coordinated outfits, and formal beach protocols. She recalled that during her student days nobody cared about what they wore or how they dragged themselves around, whereas current vacationers feel obligated to arrange matching clothes, reserve sunbeds, and follow packed itineraries.
She described this modern approach as exhausting, tiring, and ultimately inhumane toward oneself.
Student Summers and Festivals
The actress revealed that she spent two consecutive student summers on the island, staying for 15 to 20 days on each trip. She remarked that she and her companions simply forgot to leave, drawn in by the island's famous local festivals, known as panigiria, and its unhurried rhythm of life.
Papadaki expressed a deep love for the local celebrations, observing that all human cultures feature similar collective Dionysian expressions of gathering and dance. Commenting on the unique lifestyle of Ikaria's residents, she pointed out that the island operates at a calm pace where no one rushes, questioning why people in modern society are always in such a hurry.
