Television news presenter Lourdes Maldonado defended her editorial independence at Spanish public broadcaster TVE as she prepared to begin her summer vacation.
Maldonado recently finished a temporary stint hosting the flagship 3:00 p.m. weekday news bulletin on La 1, filling in for regular presenter Alejandra Herranz. She described the summer assignment as watering her colleague's plants alongside an incredible production team before taking her annual break.
Following her holiday, Maldonado will return to co-anchor TVE's weekend news broadcasts alongside journalist Marc Sala and present the network's weekly current affairs program Informe Semanal. She described the combination of weekend broadcasts and the long-running news magazine as a dream double role.
Addressing criticism from opponents who accuse public broadcaster TVE of aligning with government interests, Maldonado stated that no manager dictates her news coverage. She noted that public television belongs to all citizens rather than the ruling administration, adding that rising audience figures demonstrate growing public confidence in the network.
Maldonado emphasized that across her 30-year career in public and private media, she has consistently maintained a strict boundary between reporting and personal opinion. She stated that her duty is to present factual information to viewers rather than positioning herself on political issues.
Field Reporting and Political Interviews
The veteran journalist demonstrated her commitment to field reporting earlier this summer while on holiday in Granada. After learning about wildfires in Los Gallardos, Almería, she immediately left the beach and reached the scene within two hours to report directly from the ground.
Reflecting on recent high-profile interviewees at TVE, Maldonado commented on former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and national football team manager Luis de la Fuente. Regarding Zapatero, she noted that she is awaiting judicial developments concerning the ongoing investigation into airline Plus Ultra.
In contrast, Maldonado praised Luis de la Fuente following her interview with him after Spain won the World Cup. She described the national team manager as an exceptionally humble, patient, and warm professional who demonstrated great human quality.
Career Milestones at Antena 3
Before joining TVE, Maldonado spent 17 years at commercial network Antena 3 and had a short stint at regional broadcaster Telemadrid. Born in the Basque town of Irún in 1973, she began her broadcasting career in local television.
Maldonado highlighted the papal conclave that elected Pope Francis and the 2014 proclamation of King Felipe VI as the most significant events she was grateful to report during her time at Antena 3.
Her most painful reporting experiences involved coverage of political violence and personal loss. She recalled reporting on the death of her friend and fellow journalist Ricardo Ortega in Haiti, as well as coverage of murders committed by the Basque separatist group ETA.
Maldonado stated that an ETA attack targeting an Antena 3 colleague shortly after she joined the network's Basque Country bureau marked a sudden loss of her professional innocence.
On-Air Bloopers and Veteran Teammates
Throughout her career, Maldonado experienced several lighthearted mishaps that colleagues refer to as Lourdadas. During her early days in local news, she accidentally went on air with price tags dangling from clothes borrowed from a local retailer.
While working as head of the society and culture desk at Antena 3, an unintended image frame from a viral WhatsApp meme slipped into the opening segment of a broadcast. More recently at TVE's Torrespaña headquarters in Madrid, known as Pirulí, she accidentally broke a leg off the studio table after leaning on it too hard.
Maldonado also shared an initiation story involving veteran news anchor Matías Prats when she first joined Antena 3. After Prats asked what she was carrying in her backpack, an awestruck Maldonado listed every item inside, including her underwear, before Prats laughingly explained that he meant whether her bag was filled with professional hope and enthusiasm.
Royal Parallels and Security Debates
Maldonado noted several coincidences connecting her personal life with Queen Letizia. On November 1, 2003, as Maldonado met her parents to announce her engagement for the following year, a breaking news flash interrupted television programming to announce the royal engagement of Prince Felipe and journalist Letizia Ortiz.
Both women married in 2004, and Maldonado became pregnant with her first child around the same time Princess Leonor was born. Having met Queen Letizia multiple times over the years, Maldonado expressed deep personal admiration for the monarch.
Addressing recent public debate surrounding published magazine photographs of King Felipe VI wearing swim trunks, Maldonado dismissed security concerns as an exaggeration. She stated that seeing the monarch in swimwear should be treated as entirely normal, adding that royal security involves completely different matters.
Family Priorities and Future Hopes
Maldonado is the mother of two children aged 18 and 20. She stated that her primary concerns as a parent are their health, education, and happiness, adding that she hopes they foster tolerance and help improve society.
Reflecting on how her reporting ambitions have evolved since hoping for the end of ETA 17 years ago, Maldonado expressed a desire to deliver positive news stories in the future. She stated that she hopes to announce scientific advances, archaeological findings, extraterrestrial discoveries, global solidarity efforts, and the fall of physical and political barriers, adding that her smile remains ready for the news desk.
