Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi has announced that his new single Me Despido will be released on Thursday, August 13. The track features a Latin rhythm and marks a full turn toward bachata.

Earlier this year, Fonsi experimented with salsa on the track Cambiaré alongside Feid. Now, the artist is focusing entirely on bachata for his latest release.
The transition reflects a strategy after spending years dominating pop ballads and commercial reggaeton. Fonsi is venturing into organic, classic dance styles from his region to maintain his essence after a long career. Bachata historically originated to tell stories of bitterness and heartbreak, known as amargue, a structure Fonsi uses in this new work.
Breakup themes and tropical visual aesthetic

Teasers filtered ahead of the release show a tone of definitive breakup. The lyrics include lines expressing that life burns him and that he prefers death. Despite the sad lyrics, the song features authentic bachata instrumentation with a cheerful, danceable rhythmic base designed for late summer.
Visuals for the single center on a tropical theme. The official cover art, revealed during the pre-save campaign, displays minimalist items including a fan and two coconuts in the foreground. The design sets a warm atmosphere and confirms a summer focus despite the painful farewell story.
Fonsi enters a saturated market with the release of Me Despido. He faces competition from traditional genre figures like Romeo Santos and Prince Royce, as well as urban and contemporary pop acts who have topped charts using the genre, such as Manuel Turizo with his hit La Bachata.
Given Fonsi's long career with romantic ballads, the tragic heartbreak narrative aligns with his singing and writing style. Adding a bachata base ensures the track works on dance floors throughout the rest of the summer.
Historical success of Despacito on YouTube

Before releasing Despacito in 2017, Fonsi was regarded as a traditional romantic balladeer. The global hit pushed him into urban pop and dance rhythms, a transition he has maintained ever since.
The music video for Despacito became the fastest in history to reach 2.5 billion views, averaging 14.5 million views daily in its early stages. In August 2017, it became the first video in YouTube history to surpass 3 billion views.
The video continued to accumulate views over the years, passing 9 billion views in April 2026. Despacito remains the most viewed video by a male artist in YouTube history.
