Pop icon Madonna has seen her Grammy Awards odds surge for an Album of the Year nomination following her dominant victory at last month's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 68-year-old singer's fifteenth studio album, Confessions II, is gaining momentum among Recording Academy voters after she claimed seven trophies at the VMAs ceremony.

Madonna dominated the VMAs broadcast, taking home seven of the 13 trophies she was nominated for during the event. Her major wins included Artist of the Year, Best Dance, and Best Album.

According to awards tracker website Gold Derby, Madonna's successful night at the VMAs has significantly increased her chances for next year's Grammys, despite the record not originally eyeing a nomination.

MTV VMAs triumph and Grammy momentum

Gold Derby reported that the VMAs provided a major boost to the pop superstar's momentum heading into awards season.

"The VMAs gave Madonna a valuable platform to strengthen her case for a potential Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys," the website wrote.

The awards tracking outlet highlighted her ceremony-opening performance alongside younger pop stars Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX as a standout moment. Gold Derby described the collaboration as easily the performance highlight of the evening.

"Her showcase wins and ceremony-opening number with assists from Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, easily the performance highlight of the evening, guaranteed Confessions II will remain on Recording Academy voters' radar, while the reception she received from fellow artists in the room suggests strong industry support," the outlet added.

Gold Derby further noted that the night reinforced her standing as one of the season's most visible, viable contenders.

The MTV Video Music Awards, established in 1984 to honor top achievements in music videos, serves as one of pop music's most influential television showcases ahead of the annual Grammy voting window.

Following the VMAs, Madonna has now moved ahead of Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl in the Album of the Year category

Surpassing Taylor Swift in awards race

Following her VMAs sweep, Madonna has moved ahead of Taylor Swift's album The Life of a Showgirl in the Album of the Year category rankings.

The Queen of Pop currently occupies sixth place overall on Gold Derby's prediction leaderboards for the Album of the Year category.

Madonna trails behind five rival contenders in the overall standings: Olivia Dean, Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars, Spanish singer Rosalia, and Raye.

Swift, a multi-time Album of the Year winner, had previously held a higher position in early predictions with her record The Life of a Showgirl before Madonna's surge.

Beyond the main Album of the Year field, multiple music industry outlets including Billboard and Forbes report that Confessions II is a shoo-in to earn a nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album, with several commentators suggesting it could win the prize.

If Madonna wins Best Dance/Electronic Album, she will become the first female artist in history to win that specific category twice. She previously won the award in 2007 for her hit studio album Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Dance album record and historical context

A Grammy nomination for Confessions II would mark a major milestone in Madonna's four-decade career. The music legend has not received a Grammy nomination in any category since 2010.

Her drought in the marquee Album of the Year category stretches back even further. Madonna has not been nominated for Album of the Year since 1999, when her critically acclaimed studio album Ray of Light was nominated.

At the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in 1999, Ray of Light ultimately lost the Album of the Year honor to Lauryn Hill's landmark release The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

The Grammy Awards, presented annually by the Recording Academy, are widely regarded as the music industry's most prestigious honors. The Recording Academy consists of voting members across various musical disciplines.

Confessions II has already proven to be Madonna's most successful commercial release in decades. The disc reached No. 1 in 17 countries, including topping the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

The Billboard 200, published weekly by Billboard magazine, measures the most popular music albums in the US based on sales and streaming metrics. The album has also spawned the hit single Bring Your Love, which features Sabrina Carpenter.

Critical acclaim and personal songwriting

In addition to commercial success, Confessions II has earned widespread praise from music critics. Publications including Vogue, Mojo, and Stereogum have already ranked the disc among the best albums of 2026.

Industry publications Variety and Rolling Stone both hailed Confessions II as Madonna's best album in decades.

Daily Mail music critic Adrian Thrills gave the record four out of five stars, calling it "uniformly excellent" and describing it as a return to the singer's core musical roots.

Critics highlighted the album's deeply personal lyrics, which touch on Madonna's relationship with her daughter Lourdes, her former marriage to Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn, her late stepmother Joan, her late brother Christopher, and her early years as an emerging artist on New York's Lower East Side.

Manhattan's Lower East Side was a central hub for New York's underground music scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where Madonna launched her career before rising to global fame.

The project also features high-profile collaborations with a new generation of pop stars, including Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, as well as fellow pop icon Kylie Minogue.

Representatives for both Madonna and Swift were contacted by the Daily Mail for comment on the awards race.
