Brazilian singer Mãeana has declared that her two sons with musician Bem Gil should live as relaxed heirs without career pressure during a podcast appearance.
Speaking on the Desculpincomodar podcast, the 40-year-old artist explained that she actively encourages Sereno, 9, and Dom, 14, to take their time choosing their future paths. She contrasted her open approach with the stricter financial upbringing experienced by her husband within the prominent Gilberto Gil musical dynasty.
Mãeana recalled that her own upbringing was marked by intense expectations surrounding academic achievement and future planning. She said that environment eventually caused her to explode and drop out of school before completing her secondary education, an experience that heavily influences her current parenting choices.
Determined not to repeat that pattern with her own children, she emphasized how valuable it is for young people to grow up without heavy demands. She stated that she explicitly tells her sons they can pursue whatever career they want whenever they feel ready to do so.
A different approach to family legacy
Mãeana explained that because Sereno and Dom are calm, financially secure, and guaranteed heirs, they should be allowed to enjoy their unique position. Her perspective stands in sharp contrast to the upbringing of her husband, Bem Gil, who grew up under far tighter financial controls despite being the son of international music icon Gilberto Gil.
According to Mãeana, nothing was ever handed to Gilberto Gil's children on a silver platter. She noted that this was particularly true for the children of Flora Gil, who received no financial handouts, free assistance, or unearned privileges from their parents.
She observed that while Bem is an heir himself, this tough love approach left him highly driven and frequently stressed about building his own professional career. She explained that she maintains a completely different posture with Sereno and Dom to protect them from that constant anxiety.
