Actress Maisie Williams paid tribute to her screen mother Sandra Bullock by copying her 1999 red carpet outfit at the world premiere of Practical Magic 2 in London on Wednesday.
The Game of Thrones star, 29, arrived at Leicester Square alongside co-stars Sandra Bullock, 62, Nicole Kidman, 59, and Joey King, 27, for the red carpet launch of the fantasy sequel.
Williams wore a custom red corset-style satin dress designed by Ellie Misner. The outfit directly referenced the gown worn by Bullock at the Los Angeles premiere of her 1999 romantic comedy Forces of Nature.
Bullock, who previously reflected that she was going through a "goth period" at the time, originally wore a boat neck top and silky skirt in the same red shade and cut as Williams' new gown.
Williams paired her dress with a Roger Vivier satin clutch, a sparkling ruby and diamond choker, and showed off her tattoos on the blue carpet.
Bullock responded warmly to the homage on social media. She shared a side-by-side photograph of both premiere outfits on Instagram, captioning the post: "My heart just exploded."
Red carpet fashion and recasting details
In Practical Magic 2, Williams plays Antonia Owens, while King portrays her sister Kylie. They play the daughters of Bullock's character, Sally Owens.
Bullock reprises her role as Sally alongside Kidman as her sister Gillian. The characters are two sisters from a long line of witches trying to lead normal lives despite a family curse.
While Kidman and Bullock return to their roles alongside Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the Owens family aunts, the roles of Sally's daughters have been recast for the new film.
In the original 1998 movie, Evan Rachel Wood played Kylie while Alexandra Artrip played Antonia. Wood, who was 11 when she starred in the original, revealed that despite offering to return for the sequel, filmmakers decided to recast her role.
Artrip stepped away from acting after the 1998 movie and currently works for an advertising company.
The original Practical Magic, released in 1998, was based on Alice Hoffman's novel about the magical Owens family. Williams gained international fame playing Arya Stark in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones before joining the cast of the sequel.
Sequel plot and box office history
The new film takes place 25 years after the events of the original movie and is adapted from Alice Hoffman's 2021 sequel book, The Book of Magic.
According to the film's official synopsis: "The Owens women must once again unite, traveling from their home in Massachusetts to the United Kingdom to confront the source of their magic and save the next generation of their family."
Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the sequel, which also stars Lee Pace and Solly McLeod. Both Kidman and Bullock served as executive producers on the project.
Kidman and Bullock have been making surprise appearances to promote the upcoming release. Earlier this month, the two stars surprised fans by showing up at a Cinespia screening of the 1998 original at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.
The original Practical Magic earned $68.3 million globally according to box office tracker The Numbers, failing to recover its $75 million budget during its theatrical run. Despite its initial financial struggle, the film earned a dedicated cult following over the following decades.
Practical Magic 2 will open in cinemas on September 11.
